Deviousness |
And you other people who think that everything has to be politically correct, shove a sock in it. It hasn't been a problem until just now.
I'm calling BS on that.
But what you have to understand is that "Merry Christmas"-greeting everyone you meet is rude, even if it's not intended to be. Christmas is from, even if it's celebrated secularly also, a religion. It is tied into religion and by saying Merry Christmas you are saying "Enjoy this religious holiday which I assume you are part of and celebrate too". You also have to take into account that it isn't only from you that non-Christians are bombarded with someone else's religion. All Non-Xians have to deal with Christmas shoved in our face beginning from November (at least) from every angle, on top of everything else we normally deal with silently the rest of the year (such as on money and lots of other things.). Having our own beliefs or celebrations marginalized and ignored is par for the course, but it doesn't feel any better with time. So, combine all that with having someone else's religion and trappings ramped up into high gear for two months on top of having people just assuming to your face eventually takes a toll on some people.
It would be like if I walked around saying "Happy Yule!" to everyone on December 21st- not that bad, okay. Now what if there were millions of me and I covered every object in public sight in trappings from my religion from the end of October forward and my religion closed down almost all businesses for most of the 20th and all of the 21st. I minimized all other holidays from the season until they almost cease to be. I also cover the radio and tv with my holiday stuff. My holiday takes over the country for two months, and longer in some ways. In addition to this, I get mad and indignant at anyone who had anything to say about what I did or said. That's Christmas from an outsider's perspective.
We know you're not trying to offend us, but people take offense to rudeness whether it's intended or not. Not pausing even a moment to stop and realize what you're doing doesn't excuse it and is pretty bad in it's own right. Defending it and/or especially knowing about it but not caring/respecting others enough to stop is worse.
